I often will tell my clients that the best training program you could ever have is the one that you do. We, as humans, are literally “meaning” making machines. What we do is create reasons and meaning behind our lives that simply justifies our lives exactly as they are. You see, our minds are 100% dedicated to proving ourselves right exactly as we are. Hence, whatever we come to believe in our mind will always be proven experientially for us in the way we see the world around us.
In the process of achieving and creating a life that you want to live, the first step is always becoming clear on what your vision is. It is amazing how there is always a process that you have to go through to get to where you want to be. Unfortunately, there are always steps along the way that are not clear, but you just have to keep your vision fresh in your mind and get your plan in motion. This really is the power of the saying “if you’re not moving you’re dying”, which I believe to be true both physically and spiritually.
The law of inertia states that an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an external force. An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon. Ultimately, objects just keep on doing what they are doing until acted upon by an external force and it is the initial force which requires the most amount of energy to get the object moving. Even though this idea is ripped straight from a physics textbook, this sounds eerily true for that of our lives as well. This is ever-present in your life when you’re chugging along and everything is going great, it will often just stay that way until it doesn’t. What we are trying to do in these review periods, times of reflection in your life, is to look both behind us and in front to make sure we are getting rid of any external forces that are slowing our movement and that the movement we are doing is going in the direction that we want to go.
Inevitably, the key to living a life of vision and success is ‘Clarity and Effective Action’. This idea has been capitulated around a quote by Louis V. Gerstner Jr; “I came to see, in my time at IBM, that culture isn’t just one aspect of the game – it is the game. In the end, an organisation is nothing more than the collective capacity of its people to create value“. But why is culture important if I’m not an organisation and why do I need to create value?
To answer this, it’s important we look inward and start at the beginning. Homo Sapiens came to rule the world because we are the only animals that can cooperate flexibly in large numbers. We can create mass cooperation networks, in which thousands and millions of complete strangers work together towards a common goal. This was achieved through our capacity to tell stories that created links between people who have never met each other.
This is no different to what we are working together in Evo and in our training communities. We throw around this word Community a lot! It is most definitely the buzzword of EVERY marketplace at the moment. But how do we build an authentic community, why does community sell and why do people search for a community?
Simply, a community is our most natural evolutionary advantage. This is the mysterious glue that has allowed us to dominate and control the environment and world around us. It is not about genes, we are not stronger or faster than other animals, rather it is made up completely of stories. We create stories that will draw a common link between people and allow us to trust each other immediately, hence we can collaborate in our efforts towards a common goal. These stories include things such as gods, nations, language and most powerfully, money. All these things bind millions of people together to cooperate on an incredibly high level. Yet, none of these exists outside the stories that humans have invented and tell each other. There are no gods in the universe, no nations, no inherent human language and no money – except in the common imagination and agreements of human beings.
If we can get that ‘culture’ is the game and we are simply making up a story of what that culture is, then we are ultimately creating a story of what the game is too. This means we literally get to choose through our actions to create the culture of our life, the culture of the communities we live in and the culture of the who we want to be in the world. Every day we are living the story that we have made up in our minds. When you get this you can start to realise there is literally nothing that we haven’t created through our stories. The power in this is when we create the story we want to tell in our lives – our Vision.
